Andrea Gelcich
Biography

Andrea Gabriel Gelcich, born on October 20, 1999 in Delft, is a violist whose musical education began at an early age. His first steps in music were taken with violin lessons under music pedagogue Lenneke Willems from 2003 to 2010, followed by studies at the School for Young Talent at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Koosje van Haeringen. Later, between 2014 and 2017, he was enrolled in the Young KC / SvJT program, completing his HAVO with a music profile while studying viola with Liesbeth Steffens.
From 2017 to 2023, Andrea studied his Bachelor’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, where he studied under the guidance of Ásdís Valdimarsdottir. In 2024 he continued his academic and artistic development at the Utrecht Conservatory, studying viola with Mikhail Zemtsov.
Andrea has participated in numerous masterclasses and international projects, including an internship at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham (UK) in 2016, and an exchange with the YST Conservatory in Singapore in 2019, where he performed with the Aurora Ensemble. He has taken part in masterclasses with renowned musicians such as, Jurgen Küssmaul, Jörg Winkler, Jennifer Stumm, Michael Kugel, and Georgy Kovalev and the Matangi Quartet. His international engagements include the Oskar Nedbal International Viola Competition in Prague (2022), the Città Alta Chamber Music Week in Bergamo (2022), and the Summer Viola Masterclass in Sicily with Mikhail Zemtsov and Julia Dinerstein (2025).
His orchestral experience includes regular collaborations since 2022 with the RBO
Randstedelijk Begeleidingsorkest and the HSO Holland Symphony Orchestra, as well as his participation in the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra between 2023 and 2025. Alongside orchestral playing, Andrea has also participated in special projects such as, the NJO National Youth Orchestra (2018-2021), and several tours with the Atheneum Chamber Orchestra (2013–2018), including concerts in Finland and Tallinn and This is Me by Armin van Buuren at the Ziggo Dome (2022)
As a soloist and chamber musician, Andrea has distinguished himself with prizes such as the Britten Viola Competition in Zwolle, which led to a masterclass with Jurgen Küssmaul and a solo performance with the Britten Youth Orchestra. He was also awarded an honorable mention at the Princess Christina Competition in Rotterdam, where he later served as a juror. He has performed in chamber music concerts across the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Singapore, and has been active in various ensembles and studio recordings, including collaborations with Martin Garrix. His artistic life is further enriched by regular participation in chamber music festivals and summer courses in both the Netherlands and Germany.
Teaching is also an important aspect of Andrea’s career. He has given both private and group lessons at different levels and is currently in his third year as a teacher at the Music Academy The Hague, where he combines his pedagogical knowledge with practical experience, working with students of different ages and backgrounds.
Andrea is recognized for his reliability, ambition, collegiality, and punctuality—qualities that define his professional approach and his close artistic relationship with his instrument. His repertoire includes cornerstone works for the viola, spanning from Bach’s Cello Suites to sonatas, concertos, and chamber music by Brahms, Schumann, Mozart, Hindemith, Shostakovich, Bartók, Hoffmeister, Stamitz, Ligeti, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Reger, and Schubert.
He is a student of Fondazione Accademia di Musica since 2025.
