Gabriele Carcano
Biography

Gabriele Carcano is among the most established Italian pianists of his generation. Winner of numerous prizes, he has an international career spanning recitals, orchestral concerts and chamber music.

After winning the Premio Casella at the “Premio Venezia” Competition in 2004, he made his debut at Teatro La Fenice and at Teatro Regio in Turin. His career has since led him to perform in halls and concert seasons such as the Tonhalle in Zurich, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Herkulessaal in Munich, Musashino Hall in Tokyo, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Jerusalem Theatre, Società del Quartetto in Milan, Lugano Musica, the International Piano Festival at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Carnegie Hall in New York, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Teatro della Pergola – Amici della Musica in Florence, Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, or at the Festival Radio France – Montpellier, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, the Pablo Casals Festival, Fundación Scherzo in Madrid, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Rheingau Festival, the Stresa Festival, etc.

In January 2010 he was named winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, a prestigious recognition that placed him among the best young talents on the international music scene and led to an immediate invitation from Mitsuko Uchida to the Marlboro Festival, where he subsequently took part for four seasons. He later took part in the Musicians from Marlboro tours in cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Toronto and Montreal.

Gabriele Carcano has performed with orchestras such as the Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Staatskapelle Weimar, Orchestra Verdi, Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, collaborating with conductors such as Ton Koopman, Daniel Oren, Lawrence Foster, Alain Altinoglu, Stephan Solyom, Ion Marin, Claus Peter Flor, Clemens Schuldt, Federico Maria Sardelli and Maxim Emelyanychev.

An excellent chamber musician, he regularly collaborates with artists such as Carolin Widmann, Lorenza Borrani, Stephen Waarts, Enrico Dindo, Enrico Bronzi, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Quartetto Hermes, Viviane Hagner, etc.

His first album, entirely dedicated to Brahms’s early works, was released in the summer of 2016 on the Oehms Classics label, followed by two others in 2018 for Rubicon Classics: a solo album of music by Schumann and a duo recording with Stephen Waarts. His recordings have received enthusiastic reviews from Fono Forum, The Sunday Telegraph, The Independent, Amadeus and BBC Radio 3, as well as the Supersonic Award from Pizzicato magazine on two occasions.

Between 2020 and 2022 Gabriele Carcano performed the complete Beethoven sonatas with the Fidelio Orchestra in London, combining an in-depth study of the German composer with his attention to new ways and places in which to perform and meet the public.

In the coming season he will give concerts at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and the Boulez Saal in Berlin, as well as perform the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano in duo with Carolin Widmann in several cities.

Born in Turin, he began studying piano at the age of seven and graduated with top marks at the age of seventeen from the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” in his city, later continuing his studies under the guidance of Andrea Lucchesini at the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo and of Aldo Ciccolini in Paris. Since 2006, thanks to the support of the Associazione De Sono, Fondazione CRT and the Banques Populaires – Natexis Prize, he first settled in Paris, where he attended the classes of Nicholas Angelich at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, later furthering his studies with Marie-Françoise Bucquet. He also received advice from Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, Mitsuko Uchida and Alfred Brendel. He is a lecturer at the Mozarteum.

He teaches in the advanced training courses at the Fondazione Accademia di Musica.
