Sunghoon Simon Hwang
Born in Palermo in 1999, Gabriele begins studying piano at the age of six with Massimo Bentivegna. From 2009 he attends the class of Patrizia Pitrolo at the Conservatory “V. Bellini” of Palermo, continuing since 2012 with Antonio Sottile and graduating with the vote of 10, honours and honourable mention.
He is currently studying at the International “Incontri col Maestro” Academy of Imola, under the guidance of André Gallo and Enrico Pace.
He makes his recital debut at the age of 14 and just a year later he makes his solo debut with the “Salvatore Cicero” Orchestra and again with the Symphony Orchestra of the “Vincenzo Bellini” Conservatory of Palermo.
He has given numerous solo and chamber recitals for prestigious associations such as the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, RAI, Triennal University of Milan, “Castelbuono Classica”, Teatro Tempio in Modena, Salone della Provincia of Taranto, “Amici della Musica” of Palermo, Teatro Civico in Oleggio, UNESCO and F.A.I. Gabriele wins First Absolute Prizes and Special Prizes in National and International Competitions of Italy and Europe, including “Eliodoro Sollima” National Competition, “ANTONIO TROMBONE” Piano Competition, “Lucio Stefano D’Agata” International Competition, “Giulio Rospigliosi” National Piano Competition, “Amigdala” International Music Competition – “Giuseppe Raciti” Prize, “Maria Elisa Di Fatta” Prize, International Competition “Gianluca Campochiaro”, International Competition “Città di Francavilla Fontana” – Prize “Terra degli Imperiali, “Crescendo – Città di Firenze” Prize, International Competition “Rovere D’oro”, “Francesco Paolo Neglia” International Piano Competition.
In 2015 Gabriele is the winner in the 2nd Edition of the “Crescendo: giovani talenti della classica” Competition, thanks to which he performs as soloist with orchestra at the Teatro Politeama “Giuseppe Garibaldi” in Palermo with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra directed by Roberto De Maio.
He is also finalist at the “Steinway&Sons Piano Competition” and later at the “International Anton Rubinstein Competition” in Düsseldorf (Germany), where he receives the Special Prize for the best performance of a virtuous piece among all categories.
He usually attends masterclasses held by internationally renowned pianists such as Benedetto Lupo, Pietro De Maria, Boris Petrushansky, François Joel Thiollier, Riccardo Risaliti, Pasquale Iannone, Dennis Lee, Chee Hung Toh, Sunghoon Simon Hwang, Alexey Lebedev, Giuseppe Andaloro, Ingrid Fliter, Igor Roma, Valerij Voskoboinikov, Alessandro Deljavan and Gabriele Baldocci.
In 2017 Gabriele is guest of the “Windsor Piano Academy” (UK) where he can study with Edita Stankeviciute and Giulio Potenza.
Parallel to his solo activity, he also carries out an intense chamber activity with his saxophonist brother Alessandro. The duo has performed in prestigious places as Parco della Musica in Rome, Associaciò Musical Montserrat of Barcelona and Mozarthaus of Vienna.
They also won Absolute First Prizes and Special Prizes in competitions as “Amigdala International Music Competition”, “London Prize Virtuoso”, thanks to which they could perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall of London in 2017, and “Golden Classical Music Awards”, being invited to perform at the Weill Recital Hall of the prestigious Carnagie Hall in New York.
Since 2016 Gabriele has been the pianist of the Sicilian Youth Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has also performed as a soloist in the “Carnival of the Animals” of Saint-Saëns.
He also collaborates assiduously with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra.
In 2019 he’s awarded by the Mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando with the “Tessera Preziosa del Mosaico di Palermo”, one of the highest honours that the City of Palermo assigns to citizens who are particularly distinguished in social, artistic and cultural fields.
He collaborated as an accompanying pianist in Masterclasses held by renowned musicians such as Federico Mondelci and Jerome Laran.
In 2022 he joins a project of the “Incontri col Maestro” Academy of Imola that involves the engraving of Robert Schumann’s all piano works.
