The Advanced Course in Opera Singing taught by Laura Claycomb is intended to help students extend their vocal technique and a proper repertoire of their voice, thus giving them a solid basis with which to tackle auditions and competitions. The annual study plan consists of the study of classical operatic, concert or recital repertoire. Students can choose to take their lessons in either Italian, English, French or Spanish.
Every student has the right to two monthly lessons for the academic year from October/November 2024 (immediately following the entrance exam) to May/June 2025, for a total of 16 lessons that will include the presence of the Professor, and for 8 of these classes, also a collaborative pianist. There will also be two studio classes (group exhibition of the entire roster) with the collaborative pianist and Professor, to try out repertoire in front of an audience of their classmates, and a final concert in June, as well as the possibility to use the concert hall of the Accademia to make recordings.
The Professor will establish the repertoire to work on, and any eventual participation in competitions and concerts, in conjunction with each student. The annual course plan foresees one of the following, all to be established in conjunction with the Professor:
- the preparation of an entire operatic role;
- the preparation of a 45-minute to an hour-long recital program;
- the preparation of a 6-aria package for auditions.
Students must be in possession of a Conservatorio Diploma (old system), a Level 1 or Level 2 degree, or equivalent qualification if from a country other than Italy (at least Bachelor’s degree in music). The commission reserves the right to accept any student who shows exceptional talent, even though they may not meet the above-mentioned requirements.
Applications for the Academic Year 2024/25 must reach our offices by September 30, 2024. With the same requirements, the date of submission of the application is considered for choosing the students. Any applications sent after the deadline will be evaluated by the Directors of Studies.
The selection takes place in two phases:
- together with their application form, candidates must send a CV (curriculum with a letter of intent, one file) and a video file of one aria or song, of the applicant’s choice, made no earlier than 2023. The link to the video must be sent together with the application form, written in the field of Eligibility Requirements. The Artistic Director and M° Claycomb will assess the materials submitted and will make a list of candidates, who will be called for an audition in Pinerolo.
- Entrance exams for 2024/2025 will be held by invitation at the Accademia di Musica on 22/10/2024. The audition will consist of the live performance of a programme that includes three pieces in different languages: one aria of Mozart, one aria/canzone in Italian; one aria/canzone/lied/chanson at the student’s discretion. It will be followed by an interview with the Professor. Immediately after the examination, classes will begin for students admitted.
