Richard Goode
Biography

Richard Goode is acclaimed for his music of incredible emotional power, depth and expressiveness, and is universally recognised as one of the greatest interpreters of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. He records exclusively for Nonesuch and performs regularly in major international concert halls and festivals, both solo and with leading orchestras. The Daily Telegraph wrote of him, “There are brilliant young pianists and wise old masters who display their skill with naturalness in everything they do, without exhibitionism or elaborate virtuosity. Richard Goode is one of them”.

Goode performs in recital every season at Wigmore Hall in London and in major European music centres. He has been a regular guest at the Edinburgh Festival, the Kissinger Sommer Festival and Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse. Goode has performed with all the major orchestras in the USA and with many European orchestras.

Goode has recorded more than two dozen CDs over the years, including solo piano, chamber music and orchestral works. His latest recording, Beethoven’s five concertos with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer, was exceptionally well received by critics, who called it ‘a milestone’ (Financial Times) and nominated it for a Grammy Award.

He has won numerous awards throughout his career, including the Young Concert Artists Award, First Prize at the Clara Haskil Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy Award. His first public performance of Beethoven’s complete sonatas in New York during the 1987/8 season was praised by the New York Times as ‘the most important and memorable event of the entire season’ and was later repeated with enormous success in London at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Goode is also a highly respected teacher and mentor to young musicians, holding the position of International Chair of Piano Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and serving as Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Mannes College School of Music (New York). He also gives masterclasses for prestigious institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music, the Verbier Festival Academy and the Wigmore Hall Public Masterclass Series in London, as well as at our Academy.
