Described as a “talent exceptionnel” by Radio France, composer and sound artist Gianluca Verlingieri has gained international recognition through works presented at major festivals and institutions including INA-GRM (Paris), the Italian Academy at Columbia University (New York), the Staatsoper (Berlin), the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Parco della Musica (Rome), ZKM (Karlsruhe), the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Thomaskirche (Leipzig), as well as in numerous contexts across Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas.
His music is regularly performed by internationally renowned soloists and ensembles, broadcast in several countries, and released by labels such as NEOS Music, Da Vinci Classics, BIS Records, ESC.REC., EMA Records and Limen Music.
His compositional practice also extends to the development of interactive installations and sound-based projects integrating experimental electronics and performative practices with the visual arts — from contemporary dance to experimental theatre and video art — presented in theatrical contexts, museums, exhibitions and major retrospectives (including Burri, Fontana, Penone, Eliasson, Tiziano, among others).
As a researcher, Verlingieri identified Luciano Berio’s private sound archive at the Centro Tempo Reale in Florence, now housed at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel. He has also conducted research on the music theatre of Mauricio Kagel, at the composer’s personal encouragement, and on John Cage’s tape music, in collaboration with the archive of the RAI Studio di Fonologia Musicale in Milan and Edition Peters. More recently, he has undertaken experimental research on the use of generative AI chatbots as creative brainstorming tools.
He is Professor of Electroacoustic and Multimedia Composition and Head of the Department of New Technologies and Musical Languages (METS) at the “G.F. Ghedini” Conservatory in Cuneo, and is regularly invited to give masterclasses and lectures at leading international institutions, including the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the China Conservatory in Beijing, the Manhattan School of Music and the City University of New York.
