Sara Caneva

Sara Caneva (1991) is a composer, conductor and researcher. In 2020 she was a nominee for the Classical:NEXT Innovation Award and LaMaestra Conducting Competition Philharmonie de Paris. Since her debut in opera conducting in 2014, she has been active in internationally renowned contexts such as IEMA Klangspuren Schwaz, Romaeuropa Festival, Teatro Nazionale di Genova, Bartòk Festival, Peter Eötvös Foundation, Festival Pontino, EXPO, and worked with groups like Danubia Orchestra Obuda, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Regionale Toscana, Ensemble 900 Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, LaVerdi Orchestra, Youth Orchestra Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Berlin Sinfonietta. As a new music enthusiast, she acted considerably in contemporary music, conducting a number of world premieres. She held the young artist position at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in 2016-17, where she composed and conducted a new opera diptych. Between 2015 and 2017 she founded and conducted the Ensemble Formanti, oriented on contemporary and improvised music. Among her recent engagements, she brought on stage the multimedia opera “Trilogy in two” in a tournée with Helga Davis and the Schallfeld Ensemble. She currently pursues a PhD research in Composition at the University of Birmingham, investigating audio-visual awareness and its role and development within compositional practices. Her music has been commissioned and performed in venues such as Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Musiikkitalo Camerata Helsinki, Mozarteum Salzburg, Moscow Philharmonic, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, and broadcasted on the Italian (RAI Radio3), Austrian (ORF Ö1) and French (France Musique) national radios. Since 2018, her works are published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni. Sara was granted composer-in-residence at Bogliasco Foundation, Kone Foundation-Saari Residency, Styria Artist In Residence, Residencia de Estudiantes, Künstlerhaus Otte1 and other institutions, developing land art installations and cross-disciplinary projects.
